Turn Your Child’s Bedroom into a Sanctuary

One of my creative loves is interior design and I enjoy making aesthetically pleasing spaces.  Our children’s room can be a calm and soulful place for them to play, dream, recharge and heal (if needed).

Creating a warm and inviting bedroom for your child can be a really fun way to spend time with them and be intentional about what you place in the room.

Of course, the first part of this process is the clean up!  Depending on the age of your children I recommend having them help as much as possible.  I have found that the clean and purge day really should be separate from the decorate and design day.  It’s simply too much energy for kids.  Some kids are great at purging items and some will hold on for dear life to every little thing.  For those that can’t let go, I recommend that you clear the clutter when they aren’t around and simply have them help you tidy.

Get out your soapy lemon or lavender water (your child’s choice) and clean surfaces, mop or vacuum the floor and shine up those windows!  This prepares a clean canvas for your next step.  Enjoy the process, then let the room breathe for a day or two before you tackle the next phase.

Now think about adding healthy elements.  This is my favorite part.  There are many things we can bring into a child’s room to enhance their health.  Let’s think about all our senses here. To make your child’s room healthier think what they will see, smell and feel when spending time in their private space.

Here is a list of things for you to consider.

For the look of the room:

  • My all-time favorite addition to any room is a salt lamp.  They have such a wonderful warm glow and can work as a substitute for a night light.  They flood the room with negative ions and look so calming. When my teen gets in the shower at night, I sneak into his room, dim the lights and turn on the salt lamp to set the stage for him to wind down for bed!
  • Party stores have inexpensive paper lanterns in shapes of stars and balls that can be lighted to created a soft glow in a dark corner.
  • Full spectrum light bulbs can be substituted for fluorescent bulbs to decrease eye strain and energy drain.
  • In addition to the plethora of books most rooms have, I enjoy having a book of poetry or haiku on the beside table to read in the morning or night. Look for something with a sweet and appealing cover. Another option is to have an attractively bound bedside journal, possibly handmade by your child, providing a place to record dreams, affirmations, or stories.
  • Keeping fish is a lovely way to bring a meditative element into the room.  Create a living ecosystem your child can tend to by adding real plants to the tank.

For air quality and atmosphere:

  • An aromatherapy diffuser.  A gift of a diffuser and a collection of scents is a wonderful addition to a room.  You can teach your child to use soothing scents for sleep and educate teens about energetic scents that can sharpen their focus while doing homework.
  • A quiet but effective air purifier cleanses the air and adds negative ions.
  • I think every room should have a live plant.  I encourage my kids to have and care for one in their room.  Plants are calming and act as nature’s air purifier.
  • I often surprise my kids by leaving a small bouquet by their bedside. When they were younger we would collect flowers for their rooms.
  • I love candles in older children’s rooms. Next time you are at the farmer’s market let them choose their favorite!

To feel comfy:

  • Get a pillow that really fits your child’s body.  Adult pillows cause too much flexion for young necks.  My husband loves to open up pillows and take out the down so they are the perfect loft.  A simple stitch up and you have the perfect pillow!
  • Upgrade bedding to cotton (preferably organic). Get your child to choose a pattern they like.
  • Consider creating a separate hangout corner for storytime or as a teen chill zone.
  • Make or keep your eyes open for a quilt or blankie that lives on your child’s bed or cozy space.
  • A soft cat or dog bed so your pets can lounge in your child’s room is a sweet invitation for cuddling.

Other elements:

  • I have a special carafe and drinking glass I fill with water and place on the bedside table for when one of my kids is cycling through something.  It’s a small nurturing element that reminds them I am caring for them.
  • Find a special instrument that makes a sweet sound.  Perhaps a kalimba, petite xylophone or low toned drum that can be played when your child is spending the day in bed or heading to sleep. A music box with a favorite song can also help your child relax.

Now that you’ve read this list, make sure to steal some of these ideas for your own bedroom. Comfort isn’t just for children!

    Even though I do not have children, I do a lot of what you suggested for my own living space, but the ones I don’t I will add into my room! I love that you sneak in to your teens room to create a restful wind down space!! I am curious if you have a favourite brand of air purifier?

      I love and use Austin Air Purifiers! They last forever and are the quietest I have found.
