What Does it Mean to Live from the Inside Out?

When you develop your own inner knowing and demonstrate this to your kids, you help them get better at making independent conscious choices.

The world sometimes feels full of artificial crap, disconnected people and food and stimuli that make us sick. That stuff is always going to be out there, so how do we make choices without ending up tired and crappy and artificial ourselves?

You have intuition; you may or may not have practice listening to it, but it’s there. When your kids see you using it, they learn to look inside for their own answers — a hugely empowering practice.

A Culture of Wellness: is a lifestyle based on making decisions from a place of deep knowing and understanding about the ways our bodies are innately healthy and connected to our own inner nature.

Maintaining that connection can be a lot of work. We are bombarded with:

  • a multitude of parenting philosophies
  • a plethora of food choices
  • contradictory news reports
  • opinionated friends and family
  • societal norms and inputs

From Waldorf to Montessori, and Paleo to Western Price to blood type diet, from Dr. Spock, Dr. Sears, Dr. Phil and our mother (!) and your besties — who do you listen to……….   Yourself and your child.

I find that asking questions helps us reconnect to intuition. Next time you’re feeling conflicted or confused or overwhelmed by choices, here are some questions you could use to get present and ask yourself or your child:

  1. Does this choice support my body?
  2. Will this action increase or decrease body awareness? Can I stay connected to myself and my intuition and still make this choice?
    Sometimes you insist your sleepy kid go to tutoring or sports practice and sometimes you let them simply rest.
  3. How will my body respond to this?  Feel good now but yucky later? Or good later and yucky now?
    Older kids can answer this question for themselves.
  4. Which choice fits best with my lifestyle?
    Consider your lifestyle and your immediate needs — Is it better to eat a non-organic apple when traveling or not eat an apple at all?
  5. Can I embrace my indulgence and balance it out later?
    You can have an ice cream sundae now and fully enjoy it and eat a healthy dinner tonight.  I fully support enjoying life and its pleasures guilt free!
  6. What would be most harmonious with nature in this situation? Do I stay up late on the computer, or go to bed because I’m yawning?
    Best choices often come about by making decisions in tune with nature instead of forcing against natural laws.

Asking these questions is not about coming up with the one specific answer that the world or your mom agrees with.  It’s about making a conscious choice. This is always helpful, but especially so when we’re feeling disconnected from ourselves and overwhelmed by possibilities. Asking these questions out loud is a great way to model healthful thinking for your kids.

Questioning also prevents us from turning into the pinball mom, bouncing around from influence to influence: This theory — no, this one! — how about this new idea? Noisy inputs can distract us from what we know well already.

Living from the inside out means moving away from just responding to the outer culture. Cultivating your own perspective and your intuition will help develop your family’s Culture of Wellness.
